On Thursday 30 May 2019 our football team Olympia FC are playing in the KOPA Division 1 Cup Final against Anorthosis. It will be played at the Haringey Borough FC, Coles Park Stadium, White Hart Lane, London, N17 7JP Time: 19.45.

Jack Panayi is an active member of Lympia Association UK and is also the webmaster of lympia.com website.
Jack has organised a team of 10 consisting of family, friends and Lympiani to run the London Vitality 10k in aid of Children with Cancer U.K. on bank holiday Monday 27 May 2019.
Jack’s daughter Talia was only 14 years of age when diagnosed with Stage 3 Cancer is 6 months into her remission and has 2 monthly scans.

When I started the family tree in 1979, I realised it was not going to be easy because of the Cypriot tradition of not having a family surname. For example, the British have a surname passed down many generations but in Cyprus you are given your grandparents name and your father’s name but no surname. This tradition goes back to the days when the Ottoman’s ruled Cyprus, during this time you were not allowed to have a surname and that is why everyone had a nickname. Today as we work on the Lympia family tree we find that although some have carried on using the old Ottoman tradition many have kept their nickname as a surname.
Όταν ξεκίνησα το οικογενειακό δέντρο το 1979, συνειδητοποίησα ότι δεν θα ήταν εύκολο, λόγω της κυπριακής παράδοσης που δεν είχε οικογενειακό επώνυμο. Για παράδειγμα, οι Βρετανοί έχουν ένα επώνυμο που έχει μεταβιβαστεί σε πολλές γενιές, αλλά στην Κύπρο σας δίνεται το όνομα του παππού, της γιαγιά και το όνομα του πατέρα σας, αλλά κανένα επώνυμο. Αυτή η παράδοση χρονολογείται από την εποχή που ο Οθωμανός κυριάρχησε στην Κύπρο, κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου δεν σας επιτρέπεται να έχετε επώνυμο και αυτός είναι ο λόγος για τον οποίο όλοι είχαν παρατσούκλι. Σήμερα, καθώς εργαζόμαστε στο οικογενειακό δέντρο των Λυμπιών, διαπιστώνουμε ότι αν και μερικοί έχουν συνεχίσει να χρησιμοποιούν την παλιά Οθωμανική παράδοση πολλοί έχουν κρατήσει το παρατσούκλι τους ως επώνυμο.
